Director Soumik Sen’s Gulaab Gang film is based on Gulabi Gang, a group of Indian women vigilantes and activists dressed in pink saris, fighting against the social injustice and operating in the Bundelkhand region of central India.
Story: The film showcases the journey of Rajjo (Madhuri Dixit), a revolutionary at heart, who even as a kid wanted education and was ready to fight the society for it.
The village set-up has women being beaten up by their husband, in-laws craving for dowry and women being tortured. It is interesting to see face off between Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, Madhuri is hero of the film and Juhi the anti hero! They both do justice to their parts.
But the script writer and the director (same person?) are just about average in their departments. For a real dose of women empowerment, watch Gulabi Gang, which is still running in select theaters. Gulaab Gang is the masala remix.
Music: It isn’t the kind of album you would listen to on your way to work on the radio or on a lazy Sunday at home.
Performances: The action is crackling and Madhuri looks great, Madhuri is fantastic in her role and in action too. Juhi is interesting to watch in her negative avatar but a bit too eager to prove her point.
Soumik competently writes, sings and composes the only male song of the album, Teri jai ho. It suits better as a part of the movie. If you are into listening folk songs you would definitely love this album.
